Overview

Project Classifications and Department Reporting Categories are fields that can be used to help group and define projects. These can be useful for reporting purposes. This article provide definitions for these fields.

Key Words:

Department Reporting Category: This is set at the project level and has two options. This can be used across any project type.
Project Classification: Represents Project Class + Project Class Code and is a way to identify the type of activity the project is for and is useful for grouping and reporting.
- Project Class and Code drive Project name prefixes.
- Project Class and Code are a unique set of options per project type.

Neither Department Reporting Category nor Project Classifications drives accounting transactions.
To update these fields, use the Project and Award Data Update Application (PADUA).
Department Reporting Category*: All resources are the property of UC San Diego and unless explicitly portable, not owned by any staff, faculty, or researcher.
- Department Portfolio: Resources whose use is directed by department leadership in accordance with any internal or external restrictions placed on those resources. Examples may include funding for department operations (this was formerly known as Department Controlled).
- Faculty Portfolio: Resources whose use is directed by faculty while at the University in accordance with any internal or external restrictions placed on those resources. Examples may include Faculty StartUp and Retention funds (this was formerly known as Faculty Controlled).
- *NOTE: this used to be optional, but is required as of 9/25/23 per BFG approval.
