Overview
The Loan Administration and Collections Office (LAO) works with the School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to manage UC San Diego campus-based loans. In partnership with Heartland ECSI, the LAO Team administers and collects repayments for the following programs.
Medical School Loans
Primary Care Loan (PCL)
- Funding: Department of Health and Human Services.
- Interest Rate: 5% fixed.
- Eligibility: Students from low-income backgrounds.
- Service Requirement: Must practice in primary health care for 10 years (including residency) or until the loan is paid in full, whichever comes first.
- Deferment: Available for full-time enrollment, advanced professional training (internships/residencies), and limited active duty or Peace Corps service.
San Miguel Association Medical Scholarship/Loan Fund
- Award Amount: Approximately $10,000–$15,000 per year.
- Criteria: Awarded based on academic excellence and financial need.
- Service Requirement: Must practice in Family, Internal, or Pediatric Medicine for three years following residency.
- Note: If the service requirement is not met, the funds must be repaid as a loan.
Alumni Medical Student Loan Fund
- Funding: Contributions from UC San Diego School of Medicine graduates.
- Interest Rate: 8% fixed (subsidized).
- Eligibility: Underprivileged medical students.
- Deferment: Available during enrollment and for up to four years of internship or residency.
American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Loan
- Interest Rate: 5% fixed (subsidized).
- Eligibility: Underprivileged medical students.
- Deferment: Available during enrollment and for up to two years of internship or residency.
California Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) Loan
- Award Amount: Up to $3,000.
- Eligibility: Underprivileged California residents in their final year of medical school.
- Interest Rate: 0% during enrollment; 6.5% during the three-year repayment period following graduation.
Loans for Disadvantaged Students (LDS)
- Funding: Department of Health and Human Services.
- Interest Rate: 5% fixed (subsidized).
- Eligibility: Students from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Deferment: Available for full-time enrollment, advanced professional training, and limited active duty or Peace Corps service.
Medical University Loan Program
- Interest Rate: 5% fixed (subsidized).
- Funding: Derived from educational fees and alumni loan repayments.
- Deferment: Available during enrollment and the full duration of internship or residency.
Pharmacy School Loans
Pharmacy University Loan Program
- Interest Rate: 5% fixed (subsidized).
- Eligibility: Students in the final year of the pharmacy curriculum.
- Deferment: Available during enrollment and throughout internship or residency.
