Overview
Review the information below to understand how 529 College Savings Plan payments relate to your 1098-T Tuition Statement.
Understanding the Impact of 529 Payments
In short, 529 payments do not change how UC San Diego prepares your 1098-T form. These two items should be treated as separate components of your overall tax preparation:
- Reporting: UC San Diego reports qualified tuition and related expenses on the 1098-T form regardless of whether those expenses were paid via a 529 plan, personal check, or financial aid.
- Availability: 1098-T forms are distributed through our vendor, TABS (TAB Service Company), and are typically available to students online after January 31 each year.
- Authorized Access: To protect student privacy, parents or family members must be listed as an Authorized Payer on the student’s account to discuss or receive specific billing information.
Tax Advice Disclaimer
The 1098-T form is provided solely to assist you in determining eligibility for Education Tax Credits. UC San Diego is unable to provide individual income tax advice.
