Overview
This article is for admitted students or currently enrolled students at UC San Diego that have some prior experience with a foreign language (coursework and/or exposure to language) and need course placement. This article will assist you as it pertains to access and troubleshooting steps and who to contact if you still have questions.
Exposure to the language is defined as:
- Having spoken or heard this language at home, or
- Having studied this language in high school, middle school, elementary school, or any kind of immersion program, or
- Having studied this language in a community college or university class, or
- Having lived or studied abroad in a place where this was the primary language
If you have no exposure to the language of the course that you intend to enroll in, please enroll in 1A/1AX courses in that language.
Getting Started
To access the Linguistics Placement Test, follow these steps:
- Visit https://llp.ucsd.edu/language-program/placement.html
- Read directions thoroughly.
- Click on the “Take the Placement Test” web link to begin.
Important Notes
- Required for Placement: Take the placement test to determine your language level unless you have qualifying AP or IB exam scores
- AP/IB Exceptions: Students with AP or IB Language/Literature examresults do not need to take the placement test; placement is based on exam scores.
- Online vs Paper: UCSD students take the online placement test (French, German, Italian, Spanish). Non-UCSD students must take the paper version in the Language Lab.
- Next-Level Option: You may choose to enroll one level higher than your placement, but you cannot take a lower level course.
