Use Energy-Saving Settings on your Computer


Overview


Learn how to use your computer's energy-saving features to help conserve energy and reduce costs. By shutting down your desktop computer when you leave for the day and using these energy-saving features when you're away from your desk (unless otherwise instructed by your network administrator) you can help us conserve energy and reduce unnecessary costs.

Steps to Take


Windows 11

Set your Windows 11 computer to automatically shut off the screen after 20 minutes of inactivity and sleep after 1 hour.

  1. Select Start (windows icon) in bottom left corner, then click Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep
  2. Next to "When plugged in, turn off my screen after", choose 20 minutes
  3. Next to "When plugged in, put my device to sleep after", choose 1 hour

Windows 10

Set your Windows 10 computer to automatically shut off the screen after 20 minutes of inactivity and sleep after 1 hour.

  1. Select Start (windows icon) in bottom left corner, then click Settings > System > Power & sleep
  2. Under Screen option, select 20 minutes to indicate that you would like your screen to turn off after 20 minutes of inactivity.
  3. Under Sleep, select 1 hour to indicate that you would like to have your computer go to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity.

Mac

Set your Mac to automatically go into sleep mode after 20 minutes of inactivity.

  1. Open System Settings
  2. On the left side, select Lock Screen
  3. Next to "Turn display off on power adapter when inactive", select For 20 minutes
  4. Next to "Start Screen Saver when inactive", select For 1 hour
