Connect to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE

Overview

RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE is primarily used by guests and devices without web browsers. It uses the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands and uses WPA2-PSK security. Devices such as laptops, desktops, phones, and tablets that can see RESNET-PROTECTED as a network option should instead follow the Connect to RESNET-PROTECTED instructions.

Before connecting, please familiarize yourself with the ResNet Acceptable Use Policy

Steps to Take

Connecting to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE as a Resident

In most cases, we recommend registering your devices for RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE. Devices without a web browser must first be registered before connecting.

  1. On a device already connected to a ResNet network (such as a phone or laptop) navigate to mydevices.ucsd.edu in your web browser.
  2. Login to mydevices.ucsd.edu using your Active Directory credentials. This is the same username and password you use to log in to your email, just omit the “@ucsd.edu” from the end.
  3. You should now see the Manage Devices webpage. To add a new device, press “Add”.
    • Name: enter the model and type of device.
    • MAC Address: Enter the device’s Wireless MAC address. This is sometimes called Physical Address or Wireless Address, and where to find it depends on the device in particular. Please check our knowledge base article for more specific instructions on how to find your device MAC addresses.
    • Description: Enter your building and room number.
  4. Press Submit. You will then be taken back to the main screen, with the device listed. Your device is now registered!
    • If you see “Pending” in the Status column, this is a visual bug that can be ignored. Your device can be connected to the network immediately after registration.
  5. Connect the device you just registered to the RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE wireless network with the password “ResnetConnect” without quotations.

If you connected a device without a web browser to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE before registering, you may encounter issues for a few hours until the original session ends as the device is still stuck in the Guest policy group. This should resolve itself when the original session ends, but please feel free to contact us for assistance.

Connecting to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE as a Guest

Devices that have a web browser are able to connect to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE without registration. These devices may not have full access to UCSD resources and may need to reauthenticate from time to time. Devices without a web browser need to be registered to access RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE.

  1. Connect device to network using password "ResnetConnect".
  2. Open a web browser.
  3. You will be redirected to a Resnet webpage asking you to accept the Acceptable Use Policy, please accept and continue. You should now be able to access the internet!
    • If you have a UCSD Active Directory account, to prevent having to re-accept the Acceptable Use Policy regularly we recommend registering the device at mydevices.ucsd.edu. Instructions on how to do this can be found above in the Connecting to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE as a Resident section above.
