Overview
If you're the owner or co-editor of a Kaltura entry, you can download it using an in-player download button when editing it.
These instructions apply to all UC San Diego community members with Canvas access (students, instructors, staff, etc.). Videos can be downloaded in Canvas and in MediaSpace.
Critical Concepts
Prerequisites
- You must be a media owner or co-editor. By default you can't download someone else's media.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Viewers aren't able to download your video by default. Only owners and co-editors can download videos like this. If you want VIEWERS to be able to download your video, see one of the tutorials below:
- If you want to download a bunch of videos, reach out to us. There isn't a way to download videos in bulk on the front end. If you need a bunch of entries, shoot us an email at kaltura@ucsd.edu and we'll give you a hand.
Steps to Take
Owners and co-editors can download videos in either Canvas or MediaSpace. Follow the steps below depending on where you want to perform the action.
In Canvas | In MediaSpace |
---|
- Log into Canvas.
- Go to https://canvas.ucsd.edu.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Within Canvas, click My Media in the left navigation.
- Locate the video whose captions you want to edit, and click the pencil icon in its row.
|
- Log into MediaSpace.
- Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
- Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select Login.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Click the profile icon again and select My Media.
- Locate the video in question, click the kebab on its row (three dots), and select Edit.
|
Whether you're in Canvas or MediaSpace, be sure to be on the edit page. You will not be able to download the entry on the player page.

- Click the play button to start the video. You have to do this so that the other controls become visible in the player. You can pause it immediately if you wish.
- Click the download icon. It looks like a downward arrow on top of a line.
- You may be presented with several options of things to download. Click the line with the video, which likely has an .mp4 or .m4v extension. (If you want to download alternate quality versions, click Select quality to see those options.)
The video should download to your computer.
