Overview
Thanks to our enterprise license with Kaltura, Kaltura Capture is screen recording software available for free for both Mac and Windows-based computers. You can find links to the installer files in either Canvas or MediaSpace.
Kaltura Capture is available to all UC San Diego community members with active directory credentials.
Critical Concepts
- Recordings use disk space on your computer. When you record using Kaltura Capture, it will keep your recording files on your computer in addition to uploading them to the cloud. They aren't deleted after the upload is complete.
- Kaltura Capture appears to be more reliable on Windows. We've observed less stability on Macs.
- Make sure you meet the system requirements. See Kaltura Capture's system requirements to ensure it will run properly on your computer. It works on both Macs and Windows computers.
- It can create dual-stream recordings. If you elect to record your camera and your screen, then your recording in Kaltura will be a dual-stream recording, which allows viewers to control the arrangement of the two video streams. Handy! - It can automatically generate chapters. If you use a PowerPoint presentation during your recording, Kaltura will automatically create chapter markers each time your slide changes, and will feed the data in from your slides.
Steps to Take

- Follow steps to create a Kaltura Capture recording in Canvas.
- Go to https://canvas.ucsd.edu.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Click My Media in the global navigation on the left.
- Click Add New and select Kaltura Capture.

- Follow steps to create a Kaltura Capture recording in MediaSpace.
- Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
- Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select Login.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Click +Create and select Capture.

- On the subsequent page, click the download link appropriate for your operating system.
- After the file finishes downloading, double-click it to run the installer.
- Follow the steps in the installer to install Kaltura Capture on your computer.
