"Your connection is not secure" Error When Navigating to Websites

Overview

You may receive a "Your connection is not secure" error message when trying to access certain sites, including Canvas. Some browsers may display a "NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID" error.

This often occurs because your computer is missing a security update, or your system clock is incorrect.

Steps to Take

If you are on a Windows machine, you may need to synchronize your clock. To do this, go to Time & language > Date & time, and click "Sync now".

If this does not work, you may need to update your computer.

On a Windows machine, follow these steps:

  1. From the Start Menu in the lower left corner of your screen, click on the gear icon for "Settings"
  2. Click on Update & Security/Windows Update
  3. Click on Check for Updates
  4. Wait for the updates to download and install, then restart your computer.

On a Mac OS X machine, follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now. Older versions of Mac OS X may need to upgrade, while newer versions may only need to update.
  4. Restart your computer.
