Overview
The IRS Form 1098‑T (Tuition Statement) reports certain qualified tuition and related expenses and scholarships posted to a student’s account during a calendar year. UC San Diego issues a 1098‑T only to students who meet IRS reporting requirements. As a result, not all students receive a 1098‑T every year.
Why You May Not Have Received a 1098-T
You may not receive a 1098-T for one or more of the reasons below:
- No reportable activity
You were not charged qualified tuition and related expenses, and/or did not receive reportable scholarships or grants during the calendar year. - Timing of payments
Tuition and fees are reported in the year they are paid, not the year the classes are taken. Charges paid in a prior calendar year are reported on that year’s 1098‑T. - Non‑credit coursework
Courses that do not offer academic credit are not reportable, even if you are enrolled in a degree program. - Tuition fully covered by third parties
If tuition and fees were fully paid by scholarships, grants, employer sponsorship, VA benefits, or another third party, a 1098‑T may not be issued. - Missing taxpayer identification number
If a valid SSN or ITIN is not on file, UC San Diego may be unable to generate a 1098‑T unless one is requested, per IRS regulations.
What to Do If You Expected a 1098-T
If you believe you should have received a 1098-T, complete the steps below:
- Confirm availability
1098‑T forms are made available by January 31 for the prior tax year. - Check electronic delivery
Students who consented to electronic delivery will not receive a paper form.
Eligible forms can be viewed and downloaded online via Tab Services. - Verify your information
Ensure your SSN/ITIN and mailing address (if applicable) are accurate and up to date in your student record. - Review eligibility
Reconfirm that you had reportable tuition, fees, or scholarships for the applicable calendar year. - Contact Student Financial Solutions
If you have completed the steps above and still believe you should have received a 1098‑T, submit a case through the Services & Support portal for review.
