Military Benefits and Your Form 1098-T

Overview

Why Military Benefits are on Your Form

Per IRS regulations, UC San Diego must report all scholarships and grants—including military education benefits—in Box 5 of your Form 1098-T.

These benefits are included because they reduce the "out-of-pocket" tuition expenses you can use to claim tax credits. Even though these benefits are typically tax-exempt, the IRS requires them to be reported to ensure tax credits (like the American Opportunity Tax Credit) are calculated accurately.

For a detailed example of how the IRS treats these benefits, please review the IRS Tax Benefits for Education: Information for Veterans.
