Overview
Guide for troubleshooting issues connecting to the ResNet wireless network.
Critical Concepts
- Steps to follow, based on issue:
- Cannot Connect / No Connection Steps 2-11
- Connected, but Trouble Loading Page Steps 3-11
- Limited Connection / Self-Assigned IP Steps 3-11
Steps to Take
1. Connect to ResNet Wireless Network
- Please see Connect to ResNet Wireless Network
2. Check for Account Issues
- Try to log into another tool that requires your Active Directory credentials to confirm that your username & password works (Canvas, Ecotime, etc.). Your username is the first part of your UCSD email (everything before @ucsd.edu).
- If you are a new student and do not know your username, please go to sdacs.ucsd.edu/~icc/index.php and use the option under "Forgot Username or New Student?"
- If your password is incorrect, please reset it by going to password.ucsd.edu
3. Check for Blocks
- Check your UCSD email to see if your device is blocked due to a DMCA violation or compromised machine. If so, please follow the steps outlined in the respective email.
- Go to amiblocked.ucsd.edu to check if you are border blocked. A typical indication that you are border blocked is that the only websites you're unable to access are UCSD websites. If your device is border blocked, please submit a ticket or call the ITS Service Desk at (858) 246-4357 to request to be unblocked by the Security team.
4. Check Wireless Networks & Signal
- This step will check if you are connected to the correct network.
- If you do not see the ResNet network that you are supposed to be seeing, please try step 11 or contact the ITS Service Desk at (858) 246-4357.
- Find instructions on Checking Wireless Networks and Signals.
5. Check Device Configuration
- Verify device is configured correctly according to setup instructions (especially important for Androids & Chrome OS):
-
- Android
- Apple Products
- Apple TV
- iPhone/ iPod Touch/ iPad 4-6.x
- Mac OS X 10.4.x to 10.10.x
- Windows
- Windows 10
- Windows 8
- Third-party wireless software under Windows
- Note: Windows Vista, XP, and 7 have reached End-of-Life and are no longer supported on ResNet
6. Check Network Configuration
7. Forget Network
- This step will reset any settings that were not configured correctly.
- Find instructions on Forgetting the Network
8. Release/Renew IP
- This step will release any wrong IP addresses and renew the correct IP address
- Find instructions on Releasing/Renewing IP.
9. Flush DNS
- This step will get rid of the DNS cache stored on the computer.
- Find instructions on Flushing DNS.
10. Reset Network Settings
11. Update Device Drivers
- This step will update drivers required to connect to the internet.
- User may want to come into the front desk for this step, depending on other network connections available.
- Find instructions on Updating Device.
Windows
If the previous steps didn’t work, try to uninstall the network adapter driver, and then restart your computer. Windows will automatically install the latest driver. Consider this approach if your network connection stopped working properly after a recent update.
Before uninstalling, make sure you have drivers available as a backup. Visit the PC manufacturer’s website and download the latest network adapter driver from there. If your PC can't connect to the internet, you'll need to download a driver on a different PC and save it to a USB flash drive so you can install the driver on your PC. You’ll need to know the PC manufacturer and model name or number.
- In the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager, and then select Device Manager from the list of results.
- Expand Network adapters, and locate the network adapter for your device.
- Select the network adapter, and then select Uninstall device > the Delete the driver software for this device check box > Uninstall.
- After uninstalling the driver, select the Start button > Power > Restart.
- After your PC restarts, Windows will automatically look for and install the network adapter driver. Check to see if that fixes your connection problem. If Windows doesn't automatically install a driver, try to install the backup driver you saved before uninstalling.
Mac
If the previous steps didn't work, try to update the macOS software if your device is capable.
- Click on Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.
