Overview
If - and only if - the person who embedded a Kaltura video has enabled downloads, you can download it. It's just a matter of finding the download icon in the player.
Critical Concepts
Definitions
- Embedded video: a video that is inserted into a webpage using an embed code. In Canvas this is done by clicking the "embed Kaltura media" icon in the rich content editor. We often make a distinction between "published" Kaltura videos and "embedded" Kaltura videos; the former are videos that are in a course's Media Gallery and the latter are videos inserted into Canvas pages (or anywhere else in Canvas where the rich content editor is available).
Things to Keep in Mind
- Embedded videos aren't downloadable by default. The person who embedded it must have taken extra steps to make it downloadable.
- You'll be downloading the "source" file. The source file is the original file that was uploaded to Kaltura. While this is usually the highest quality version available, it usually also has the largest file size.
- For dual-stream entries, you'll only be downloading the "parent" stream. Dual-stream videos allow viewers to control the arrangement of two video streams within the player. If a user has enabled downloads for an embedded dual-stream video, however, you'll only be able to download the so-called "parent" stream, which is almost always the screen capture (plus audio).
Assumptions
- You're already looking at the page that has the embedded video. Because videos can be embedded in a variety of places in Canvas, we'll start the (very short) instructions assuming that you're already looking at the embedded video.
Steps to Take
-
Click the play button to start the video. You have to do this so that the other controls become visible in the player. You can pause it immediately if you wish.
-
Click the download icon. It looks like a downward arrow on top of a line.
-
You may be presented with several options of things to download, such as the video's captions or other attachments. Click the line with the video, which likely says "Source" and has an .mp4 or .m4v extension.
