Overview
Thanks to our enterprise license with Kaltura, Kaltura Capture is screen recording software available for free for both Mac and Windows-based computers. It can record your camera, screen, and microphone simultaneously. You can find links to the installer files in either Canvas or MediaSpace.
Kaltura Capture is available to all UC San Diego community members with active directory credentials.
Critical Concepts
- Recordings use disk space on your computer. When you record using Kaltura Capture, it will keep video files on your computer in addition to uploading them to the cloud. They aren't deleted after the upload is complete.
- Make sure you meet the system requirements. See Kaltura Capture's system requirements to ensure it will run properly on your computer. It works on both Macs and Windows computers.
- Kaltura Capture appears to be more reliable on Windows. We've observed less stability on Macs.
- It can create dual-stream recordings. If you elect to record your camera and your screen, then your recording in Kaltura will be a dual-stream recording, which plays both video streams within the same player and allows viewers to control the arrangement of the two video streams. - It can automatically generate chapters. If you use a PowerPoint presentation during your recording, Kaltura will automatically create chapter markers each time your slide changes, and will feed the data from your slides into each chapter's metadata.
- Kaltura Capture isn't supported on mobile devices. It will only work as a desktop application.
Steps to Take

- Begin creating a Kaltura Capture recording in Canvas:
- Go to https://canvas.ucsd.edu.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Click My Media in the global navigation on the left.
- Click Add New and select Kaltura Capture.

- Begin creating a Kaltura Capture recording in MediaSpace:
- Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
- Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select Login.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Click +Create and select Capture.

- On the subsequent page, click the download link appropriate for your operating system.
- After the file finishes downloading, double-click it to run the installer.
- Follow the steps in the installer to install Kaltura Capture on your computer.
