Overview
Students' answers to Kaltura in-video quiz questions are visible in the analytics of the entry. This article tells you how to find and interpret them.
These instructions apply to all Kaltura users (instructors, students, and staff), since everyone is able to create in-video quizzes. Quiz responses can be viewed in Canvas or MediaSpace.
Critical Concepts
Prerequisites
- You must be the owner or co-editor of the entry. Only owners and co-editors are able to view the analytics of an entry (where quiz responses are kept).
Things to Keep in Mind
- In Canvas, to have answers track properly, students need to have a Kaltura account created, which happens automatically whenever they visit "My Media" or a Media Gallery. Students' Kaltura accounts are NOT created if they only ever view an embedded video (within your Canvas modules). If your students don't have a Kaltura account, their responses won't be recorded under their name. So if you're teaching a first-year course and embedding a quiz towards the beginning of your course, it's a good idea to encourage students to click on "My Media" at least once.
Steps to Take
Quiz responses can be viewed in Canvas or MediaSpace.

Once here, in addition to the ability to view basic video analytics, there are two different ways you can look at students' quiz submissions: by question (the "Quiz Questions" tab) or by student (the "Quiz Users" tab).
The "Quiz Questions" Tab
The "Quiz Questions" tab shows a list of all the questions you created in your Kaltura Video Quiz. If you click any of the questions, you'll see all the responses to the question, sorted by students' first names. You can download student responses to each question within each question's section as a CSV file, which you can open with Microsoft Excel. Green or red thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons allow for easy scanning to which students answered correctly or incorrectly.
The "Export to CSV" button at the top of the "quiz questions" tab downloads a document to your computer that lists each question, how many students answered it correctly or incorrectly, and the total percentage of correct answers. The way to see students' answers to the individual questions is to download the CSV within each question's section.
The "Quiz Users" Tab
The "Quiz Users" tab presents a list of all the students who took the quiz. Clicking on any of the names will reveal both the question asked as well as the user's answer. Green or red thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons allow for easy scanning to see whether students answered correctly or incorrectly.
There are several other pieces of information for each user:
- Attempts indicates how many times the student attempted the quiz and also indicates how many attempts you gave them.
- Final score (latest) indicates a percentage of questions that the user answered correctly.
- Gradebook sync is only applicable to quizzes that have been integrated with the gradebook. Kaltura will perform a check to ensure that the scores stored in the analytics transfer properly to the Canvas grade book and indicate the result in this column. (If it says something other than "Success" for an integrated in-video quiz, let us know at kaltura@ucsd.edu.) If you're interested in learning more, see our tutorial on creating an in-video quiz integrated with the Canvas gradebook.
- The trashcan icon will erase that user's latest attempt. Use this if you're, say, making an exception to allow a student to retake a quiz.
The "Export to CSV" button at the top of the "quiz users" tab downloads a document to your computer that lists each student, whether they got the particular question correct, and their specific response. To see all responses from a student, download the CSV within their individual section.
