Hide Captions from the Kaltura Player

Overview

Most entries in Kaltura only have one set of ASR* captions. If your entry has more than one set of captions, however, you can choose to hide the captions from viewers within the player without actually deleting them.

These instructions apply to all UCSD Kaltura users with active directory credentials (instructors, students, staff, etc.). Hiding captions can be performed in Canvas as well as MediaSpace (opens in a new tab).

*ASR: automated speech recognition.

Steps to Take

You can hide captions for an entry within Canvas or MediaSpace, so for the first three steps, choose the column based on where you intend to perform the task.

In CanvasIn MediaSpace
  1. Log into Canvas.
    1. Go to https://canvas.ucsd.edu.
    2. Enter your active directory credentials.
  1. Log into MediaSpace.
    1. Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
    2. Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select Login.
    3. Enter your active directory credentials.
  1. Within Canvas, click My Media in the left navigation.
  1. Click the profile icon again and select My Media.
  1. Locate the video whose captions you want to edit, and click the pencil icon in its row.
  1. Locate the video in question, click the kebab on its row (three dots), and select Edit.
  1. Click the Captions tab underneath the video player. You should now see the list of captions affiliated with your video.
  2. Here you'll want to make sure the correct captions are identified to display as selectable options to viewers in the player. You're looking for a small icon that looks like a screen with a play button in it. If it has a slash through it (tooltip: Show on Player), that caption file is currently NOT visible to viewers. If there is no slash (tooltip: Don't Show on Player), those captions are visible. If the icon is in the wrong state for the caption file you want viewers to see, click it to change it.
A screenshot of the actions available to perform on Kaltura captions. The icons in the last column of the "actions" column (hide/show captions) are circled.
If the icon in the rightmost column of the "Actions" section has a slash through it, that means that those captions are currently NOT visible in the player. Click the icon to change that.
