Overview

Kaltura users at UC San Diego (i.e. all community members with active directory credentials) are able to get embed codes for their media, allowing them to add them to external websites. You can only find this embed code in MediaSpace.

Critical Concepts

• Don't use this embed code in Canvas. If you want to embed videos on pages in Canvas, you should use the so-called "Browse, Search, and Embed" methodology that Kaltura provides, which is accessible via an icon in the rich content editor. (See our tutorial on embedding videos in Canvas if needed.) Kaltura has a specific way to do this in Canvas to ensure that instructors can gather accurate analytics. Only use this embed code if you intend to embed your media on a non-Canvas website.
• You'll need administrative access to a web page in order to use the embed code. It may go without saying, but in order to use an embed code, you have to be able to edit the HTML of a page. 

Steps to Take

1. If you're not already logged into MediaSpace:
   1. Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
   2. Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select My Media.
   3. Enter your active directory credentials (if prompted).
2. Find the video in question by scrolling or searching, and click on either the title or thumbnail.
3. Below the player, click the Share button.
4. Click </> (the embed icon).
5. Use the "Choose player" pull-down menu to select the player you want to use, if applicable. (Note that as of July 2026, there aren't any other players from which to choose.)
6. Use the "Max embed size" pull-down menu to select the size of the embed. (It's referred to as "max size" because it will be adaptive on mobile devices or small screens.)
7. If desired, identify a start point by clicking the checkbox and entering a timecode in the adjacent field. (Note that viewers will be able to see before that point if they wish.)
8. Click Copy embed.
9. Paste the embed code on your web page.
