Overview
Kaltura users at UC San Diego (i.e. all community members with active directory credentials) are able to grab embed codes, allowing them to put their Kaltura media on external websites. You can only find this embed code in MediaSpace.
Critical Concepts
- Don't use this embed code in Canvas. If you want to embed videos on pages in Canvas, you should use the so-called "Browse, Search, and Embed" methodology that Kaltura provides, which is accessible via an icon in the rich content editor. (See our tutorial on embedding videos in Canvas if needed.) Kaltura has a specific way to do this in Canvas to ensure that instructors can gather accurate analytics.
- These instructions also apply to MediaSpace playlists. Though you don't find playlists in "My Media," you can also embed playlists in the same way.
- You'll need administrative access to a web page in order to use the embed code. It may go without saying, but in order to use an embed code, you have to be able to edit the HTML of a page.
Steps to Take
- If you're not already logged into MediaSpace:
- Go to https://mediaspace.ucsd.edu.
- Click the profile icon at the top right of the page and select My Media.
- Enter your active directory credentials.
- Find the video in question by scrolling or searching, and click on either the title or thumbnail (NOT the pencil icon).
Below the video, click the Share tab. Information should populate below.- Click the Embed sub-tab.
- [OPTIONAL] Configure your embed.
- Start Time: Feel free to enter a start time for the embedded video, if desired. Note that viewers can still watch the full video if they want to - it doesn't hide any of the video from them or anything like that.
- Player Size: While there are three sizes from which to choose, you can manually edit the embed code yourself to change it to something specific once you paste it on your webpage.
- Responsive Sizing: We recommend that you check this box. This will essentially make it so that the "player size" you select is a maximum size. So the video player will dynamically shrink if the page gets really small. This is generally a mobile-friendly option.
- Select all of the code in the textbox and copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl-C in Windows, Cmd-C on a Mac).
- Paste the embed code on your web page.
