Student Organization Websites and Email FAQ

Overview

UC San Diego-hosted student organization websites and email are no longer offered, beginning the 2024-2025 academic year. Organizations that currently have a UC San Diego-hosted website will maintain service through the Fall 2024 quarter, but will need to migrate any relevant content to a non-UC San Diego website by December 13, 2024. Organizations with an email address in the UC San Diego domain will have their mailboxes deactivated on September 21, 2026.

Websites

Why are university-hosted websites being discontinued?

Registered student organizations are considered independent third parties to the university and are not official units or departments of UC San Diego. Therefore, UC San Diego is not responsible for the acts or omissions of registered student organizations and/or any members/persons acting on behalf of those student organizations.

How can I find a new location or platform that will host my student organization's website?

Recommended and easy-to-use platforms you might consider include WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace.

How can people find my site if it's not hosted by the university?

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) office will continue to operate a current listing of all registered student organizations at studentorg.ucsd.edu, including directing visitors to any external websites or social media accounts that you note as representing your organization.

Email

Why are student organization email accounts being discontinued?

Registered student organizations are considered independent third parties to the university and are not official units or departments of UC San Diego. Therefore, UC San Diego is not responsible for the acts or omissions of registered student organizations and/or any members/persons acting on behalf of those student organizations.

Is there an exception process for student organizations to keep their @ucsd email?

The University is not able to make exceptions to this change. If your organization currently uses a UC San Diego-hosted email account, it is important to transition to a new, non-UC San Diego email address and to download or transfer any emails and Google Drive files your organization wishes to keep before September 21, 2026.

If your organization is affiliated with a UC San Diego Academic Department or other department, your student organization’s @ucsd email account may not be transferred to the department.

Can I forward my former @ucsd.edu address to a third-party email address?

No, email forwarding is not available for student organizations, even if they are hosted on a third-party email service.

Will my organization be able to access old emails and Google Drive documents after September 21?

Yes, UC San Diego will retain retired student organization email accounts and Google Drive content for six months following the retirement date. During the six-month period, student organizations may request access to archived emails or documents by contacting Instructional Computing Services by emailing its-ics@ucsd.edu.

What should my organization do next?
