Overview
If you were issued a device by UC San Diego, it may be managed through a Mobile Device Management (MDM) system. MDMs allow the departments to manage their devices remotely and uniformly. The following is a guide on how to figure out if your device is already managed by Intune, Jamf, or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM).
Critical Concepts
- Personally-owned devices generally do not have an MDM already configured on them. As part of the Secure Connect project, devices accessing trusted resources will need to have one of the three approved MDMs installed.
- Not all devices issued by UC San Diego will have an MDM already configured on them; if you need access to trusted resources and have a device issued by UC San Diego that does not yet have an MDM configured, you will need to install Intune Company Portal as a self-managed device.
- Jamf is used by some departments to manage their MacOS devices.
- MECM is used by some departments to manage their Windows devices.
- Intune is able to manage multiple different device types.
If your device has an MDM that was not configured by you and you are experiencing issues accessing trusted resources, please contact your departmental IT for further assistance.
Checking for Intune
Both MacOS and Windows devices can be managed by Intune. To figure out if your device is managed by Intune, follow the steps below for your respective operating system (MacOS or Windows). If at any point you see “Company Portal” installed via the steps below and you did not install it previously, then you are managed by Intune.
MacOS
There are 2 methods for checking if your MacOS device is managed by Intune:
- Method 1:
- Navigate to “Finder” > “Applications”.
- If you are managed by Intune, once you are in the applications folder, there will be an app named “Company Portal”.
- Method 2:
- On your keyboard, simultaneously press “COMMAND(⌘) + SPACE” and then type “Company Portal”.
- If in the search bar, the text “- Open” appears next to what you just typed, then the “Company Portal” is installed on your device and you are managed by Intune.
Windows
There are 2 methods for checking if your Windows device is managed by Intune:
- Method 1:
- Navigate to “Settings” > “Apps”.
- If you are managed by Intune, once you are in the applications section, there will be an app named “Company Portal”.
- Method 2:
- On your keyboard, press the “Windows” key (or click the “Start” button on the bottom of the screen) and type “Company Portal”.
- If an application named “Company Portal” appears and you see a button to “Open” it, then you are managed by Intune.
Checking for Jamf
Devices that will already be managed by Jamf only include MacOS devices issued by UC San Diego. There are two methods outlined below for checking if your MacOS device is managed by Jamf:
- Method 1:
-
- Navigate to your device’s “System Settings” > “General” > “Login Items & Extensions”.
- If your device is managed by Jamf, under the “Allow in the Background” section, there will be applications called “Jamf Self Service” and “JAMF Software”.
- Method 2:
- Navigate to your device’s “System Settings” > “General” > “Device Management”.
- If your device is managed by Jamf, there will be a setting called “UCSD JAMF MDM Profile”. There may also be some other settings in this section with “Jamf” in their names, such as “Jamf Notifications”, “Jamf Remote Assist PPPC”, and “Managed Login Items - Jamf Apps”.
Checking for MECM
Devices that will already be managed by MECM only include Windows devices issued by UC San Diego. There are three methods outlined below for checking if your Windows device is managed by MECM:
- Method 1:
- Navigate to your device’s “Start” menu and type in “Software Center”. If this application is installed on the device, then your device is managed by MECM.
- Method 2:
- Navigate to “File Explorer” > “This PC” and click on the drive that has “C:” in the name.
- If your device is managed by MECM, there will be three folders called “ccm”, “ccmcache”, and “ccmsetup”.
- Method 3:
- Navigate to your device’s “Start” menu, type in “Control Panel”, and click “Open”.
- Next, go to “System and Security”. If your device is managed, you will see a “Configuration Manager”.
- Click on “Configuration Manager” > “Configurations”. If your device is managed by MECM, there will be a property called “CCM Deployment”.
