IT Services - How to Set Up a Printer on Eduroam Wireless Network

Overview

This article provides instructions for IT support teams across the UC San Diego campus on how to set up printers on the Eduroam wireless network.

Secure Connect configurations on the network can cause some interference with printing on UCSD-Protected. For smoother connectivity between devices and printers, users can print from the Eduroam wireless network. However, local IT teams may need to first make some configuration changes to the printer to allow for printing on Eduroam.

Critical Concepts

If the local network already has the default inbound rule set to “allow”, users on UCSD-Guest or Eduroam should already be able to print on the local printers.
This guide assumes devices connecting to the printer are using the Eduroam wireless network. The printer can be both wired or wireless.
This guide also assumes the firewall has the default inbound rule set to "deny".

Steps to Take

You can configure your own printer by configuring your own Fortinet group. You will need to set up:

An address group that defines the campus IP addresses
An address group that includes all of the printers that are being configured
A service group that includes the broad set of ports needed to talk to every printer on the network
On the network, allow campus IP addresses to talk to the printer group IPs that are located on the designated printing ports.
