NIH F30 Budget Guide for Predoctoral Applicants
This article covers the budget portion of NIH F30 applications for Predoctoral Applicants enrolled in a professional dual degree program (e.g., MD/PhD, PharmD/PhD, etc.).
Detailed Budget Format
A detailed budget is a required component for a complete Kuali PD record.
NRSA Stipends, Tuition/Fees and Other Budgetary Levels Effective for Fiscal Year 2024
The F30 budget will consist of the following:
- Predoctoral Stipend: $28,224
- NRSA Institutional Allowance: $4,750
- Childcare Costs (If applicable): $3,000
- Tuition & Fees: To estimate your T&F, refer to the Budget Workbook on the SPO website:
Steps to estimate T&F:
- Navigate to the appropriate fee schedule, PhD-MD or PhD-PharmD
- Determine which fiscal year correlates to your school year
- Determine which quarter your proposed project start year falls into
- Color block each FY & quarter with a different color
- Note: Over the total duration of F30 support, at least 50% of the award period must generally be devoted to graduate research training leading to the doctoral research degree
F30 Budget Example
Below is an example of a three-year F30 Budget beginning in Fiscal Year 2026 in the Winter Quarter with two years of PhD and 1 year MD.
Using the UCSD Budget Workbook, this can be found by navigating to the PhD-MD fees tab. The proper quarter and FY will be based on your proposed project start date. Color blocking helps us easily identify how you’ve prepared your budget.
Add up each year’s T&F total and navigate to the F30 tab of the workbook.
- Enter the total tuition & fees in the appropriate year in row 6.
- Color block to match the colors for each year.
- Enter the current Predoctoral Stipend amount to each column: $28,224
- Enter the current NRSA Institutional Allowance amount to each column: $4,750
- Enter the childcare costs to each column. If applicable $3,000 or if not applicable $0.
ASSIST: R&R Cover
In ASSIST, go to the R&R Cover Page and locate #15A and 15C.
- For #15A and 15C, enter the total funding request from the budget workbook
- For #15B and 15D, enter 0.
ASSIST: Fellowship Supplement Form
In ASSIST, go to the Fellowship Supplement Form and locate line #25 Tuition and Fees.
- Check the "Funds Requested" box and enter the estimated costs of Tuition and Fees per year according to the budget workbook.
In ASSIST, go to the Fellowship Supplement Form and locate line #26 Childcare Cost:
- Indicate whether funds are being requested for childcare costs by checking the appropriate box ("None Requested" or "Funds Requested"). If funds requested, enter $3,000 per applicable year.
