Overview
Follow these steps to set up your Ubuntu 8.10 and above Linux machine to use the WPA2-E encrypted campus wireless at UC San Diego, UCSD-PROTECTED.
Critical Concepts
Before you begin, you must have:
- You must have root privilege on your computer to successfully complete these steps.
- Ubuntu 8.10 has not been shown to function successfully on encrypted wireless when using the Broadcom BCM43XX series cards found in some notebook computers.
- An Active Directory (AD) username and password. Your username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address (before the @ symbol). If you have forgotten your password, reset it at password.ucsd.edu.
Steps to Take
Find UCSD's encrypted wireless network:
- Find the Network Manager icon in the notification area. It should look like a small signal strength indicator or a computer monitor and will probably be close to the clock.
- Right-click the icon and ensure that Enable Networking is selected in the pop-up menu.
- Make sure that Enable Wireless is selected.
- Left-click the Network Manager icon and select UCSD-PROTECTED
In the Wireless Network Authentication Required window:
- In the Wireless Security field, choose WPA & WPA2 Enterprise.
- Click Connect.
- In the Authentication field, choose Protected EAP (PEAP).
- Leave Anonymous Identity blank.
- In the CA Certificate field, choose NONE or N/A.
- In the PEAP Version: field, choose Version 0.
- In the Inner Authentication: field, choose MSCHAPv2.
- Enter your Active Directory username and password.
