RESNET-PROTECTED is the preferred network for on campus residents connecting phones, computers, tablets, and other devices that support both 5GHz and WPA2-E encryption. The instructions below cover connection steps for many of the most popular types of devices.

Critical Concepts

Only devices that support both WPA2-E and 5GHz are able to connect to RESNET-PROTECTED. Most phones, computers, and tablets will support WPA2-E and 5GHz, but many other devices such as game consoles or smart TVs do not. If you do not see the RESNET-PROTECTED network as an available network in a residential area, your device most likely does not support WPA2-E or 5GHz and as a result is unable to connect to RESNET-PROTECTED. We recommend searching online for your device to see if it supports these standards.

Devices without support for 5GHz and WPA2-E encryption will need to connect to RESNET-GUEST-DEVICE instead of RESNET-PROTECTED.

To login to RESNET-PROTECTED, you will need to know your UCSD Active Directory username and password. For most accounts, this is the first part of your UCSD email address without the @ucsd.edu and your email password. If you do not know your password, you can reset it at password.ucsd.edu.

Steps to Take

Windows

1. Select the RESNET-PROTECTED network.
2. Enter your Active Directory username and password and select Connect. This is the same username and password you use to log in to your email, just omit the “@ucsd.edu” from the end.

Mac

1. Select the RESNET-PROTECTED network.
2. Enter your Active Directory username and password and select Join. This is the same username and password you use to log in to your email, just omit the “@ucsd.edu” from the end.

iPhone and iPad

1. Select the RESNET-PROTECTED network.
2. Enter your Active Directory username and password and select Join. This is the same username and password you use to log in to your email, just omit the “@ucsd.edu” from the end. 
3. Please accept the certificate if prompted.

Android and Chromebook

1. Select the RESNET-PROTECTED network.
2. EAP Method: Select PEAP.
3. Phase 2 Authentication: Select MSCHAPV2.
4. For CA Certificate, you typically have two options:
   
   1. Select N/A, (unspecified), or Do not validate.
   2. Select Use system certificates.
      
      1. Online Certificate Status: Select Do not validate.
      2. Domain: Enter ucsd.edu
5. Identity: Enter your Active Directory username.
6. Anonymous Identity: Leave blank or enter anonymous@ucsd.edu.
7. Password: Enter your Active Directory password.
8. Click Connect.

Linux

Linux comes in many different flavors, so one set of instructions will not necessarily work for every distrubution. The following settings will generally work for many distros, however you may need to enter them in various ways. 

1. SSID: RESNET-PROTECTED
2. EAP Method: PEAP
3. Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPV2.
4. For CA Certificate, you typically have two options:
   
   1. N/A, (unspecified), or Do not validate.
   2. Use system certificates.
      
      1. Online Certificate Status: Do not validate.
      2. Domain: ucsd.edu
5. Identity: Your Active Directory username.
6. Anonymous Identity: Leave blank or use anonymous@ucsd.edu.
7. Password: Your Active Directory password.
8. Click Connect.
