NIH F32 Budget Guide for Postdoctoral Applicants
This article covers the budget portion of NIH F32 applications.
Detailed Budget Format
A detailed budget is a required component for a complete Kuali PD record.
The F32 budget will consist of the following:

- NRSA Institutional Allowance: $12,400
- Childcare Costs (If applicable): $3,000
- Tuition & Fees: None. F32 is only allowed T&F if they are necessary and if the costs are associated with specific course work (or a degree-granting program, if applicable) that supports the research training experience and that are identified and described in the “Training Activities and Timeline” attachment. For example, if the fellow needs to take additional coursework or attend specialized training programs, these costs must be strongly justified. This is rare.
To prepare your budget, refer to the NIH NRSA Budget Workbook on the SPO website:
- Navigate to the F32 tab
- Determine the appropriate postdoctoral level for your stipend request and enter the amount to each column.
- Enter the current NRSA Institutional Allowance amount to each column: $12,400
- Enter the childcare costs to each column. If applicable $3,000 or if not applicable $0.
F32 Budget Example
Below is an example of a three-year F32 Budget with the postdoc rate beginning in postdoc career level 0. Each applicant’s proper career level will be based on their own experience.
Row 8 will auto calculate the Total Funding Request.
ASSIST: R&R Cover
In ASSIST, go to the R&R Cover Page and locate #15A and 15C.
- For #15A and 15C, enter the total funding request from the budget workbook
- For #15B and 15D, enter 0.
ASSIST: Fellowship Supplement Form
In ASSIST, go to the Fellowship Supplement Form and locate line #25 Tuition and Fees.
- Check “None Requested.” F32 is only allowed T&F if they are necessary and if the costs are associated with specific course work (or a degree-granting program, if applicable) that supports the research training experience and that are identified and described in the “Training Activities and Timeline” attachment. For example, if the fellow needs to take additional coursework or attend specialized training programs, these costs must be strongly justified.
In ASSIST, go to the Fellowship Supplement Form and locate line #26 Childcare Cost:
- Indicate whether funds are being requested for childcare costs by checking the appropriate box ("None Requested" or "Funds Requested"). If funds requested, enter $3,000 per applicable year.
