Overview
An error may appear in ASSIST when submitting the Common Form Biosketch or Current & Pending Support, even though the documents were generated successfully through PubMed.
- Having multiple PubMed accounts is a common cause of ORCiD-related errors.
- ORCiD must be associated within the document’s identifying information section to pass ASSIST validation.
Symptoms
- ASSIST displays an error during validation or submission
- Common Form Biosketch or Current & Pending Support cannot be accepted
Cause
This error occurs when the Common Form documents are not associated with the user’s ORCiD. The most common reasons are:
- The ORCiD is linked to a different PubMed account (often one created using a personal email address)
- The ORCiD has not been associated in the Identifying Information, Organization and Location section at the top of the document
ASSIST requires the following three accounts to be linked together:
Resolution
Step 1: Associate ORCiD with the Common Form Documents
- Open the Common Form Biosketch or Current & Pending Support.
- At the top of the document, locate the Identifying Information, Organization and Location section.
- Select Edit.
- Link your ORCiD.

Step 2: Check for Multiple PubMed Accounts
If you are notified that your ORCiD is already associated with another PubMed account:
- Log in to the other PubMed account (commonly associated with a personal email).
- Unlink the ORCiD from that account.
- Log in to your institutional PubMed account (for example, @ucsd.edu).
- Link the ORCiD to the correct account.
Step 3: Verify Required Account Links
Confirm that all required connections are in place:
- ORCiD is linked to PubMed
- PubMed is linked to the Common Form documents
- eRA Commons is linked to ORCiD
Result
Once ORCiD is linked to the correct PubMed account and associated with the Common Form documents, the ASSIST error is resolved and submission can proceed successfully.
