Undergraduate Housing: Roommate Groups- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 

Overview 

This article explains who can form roommate groups, who they can form them with, and what limitations apply based on housing status. 

Roommate group eligibility depends on the housing process a student is participating in. Students may only form roommate groups within the same housing group and cannot create groups across different processes. 

The three main housing groups are: 

  1. Incoming students (newly admitted first-year and transfer students)
  2. Continuing students with a housing guarantee
  3. Waitlist students 

General Questions 

Who can I form a roommate group with? 

You may only form a roommate group with students in the same housing process as you.  

Do roommate groups apply to entire apartments or suites? 

It depends on your housing process: 

  • For incoming students, roommate groups apply only to the bedroom, not the full apartment or suite. 
  • For continuing students, groups may include roommates, suitemates, or apartment-mates, depending on availability. 

 

Incoming Students 

Can incoming students form roommate groups? 

Yes. Incoming students may form roommate groups with up to two other incoming students, for a maximum of three students total. 

Can incoming transfer students room with first-year students? 

No. Incoming transfer students cannot form roommate groups with incoming first-year students. 

Do incoming students choose their rooms? 

No. Housing assignments are made by UC San Diego Housing Allocations team. Students do not select specific rooms. 

Are there college restrictions for roommate groups? 

Yes. Incoming first-year students are typically housed within their college of registration and may only form roommate groups with students from the same college. 

 

Continuing Students with a Housing Guarantee 

Can I form a roommate group during Room Selection? 

Yes. Students participating in Room Selection may form roommate, suitemate, or apartment-mate groups.  

What are the requirements for forming a group? 

All group members must: 

  • Be in the same Room Selection Community 
  • Be in the same Room Selection Category 
  • Have the same gendered housing preference  

Is there a limit to group size? 

Yes. Groups are limited by the largest available apartment or suite size within the selected community. 

Who selects the room for the group? 

The group leader is responsible for selecting the suite or apartment and assigning members to specific rooms during the Room Selection process. 

Are there housing location restrictions? 

  • Students who entered UC San Diego as first-year students must remain in their college of registration. 
  • Continuing transfer students are housed within Upper Division Housing communities. 

 

Waitlist Students 

Can waitlist students form roommate groups? 

No. Students on the housing waitlist cannot form roommate groups. Students are assigned based on available spaces at the time a space is offered.
