Understanding Course Number & Enrollment Changes (ISIS → TSS)

Overview

This job aid explains the key scheduling and enrollment changes UC San Diego departments will see as course and section data transition from ISIS to Triton Student Systems (TSS) and are managed in the Instructional Scheduling Assistant (ISA). These updates are being introduced to align existing workflows with future TSS functionality. Although these changes are going live prior to the full TSS rollout, they reflect the standards and structure that TSS will require.

Audience: Department Schedulers, Course Planners, ISA Users
Effective: Spring scheduling and beyond

Essential Information

Three major changes are happening as UC San Diego transitions from ISIS to TSS:

  1. Course numbers & section codes are changing
  2. Course instruction type terminology is changing
  3. Departments will no longer be able to set enrollment limits to zero

These changes affect how courses are identified, how sections are numbered, and how enrollment and waitlists are managed.

Course Number & Section Code Changes:

1. New Course Number Format: In TSS, course numbers will now use the following:

ISIS CourseTSS Course
MATH 18MATH-018
MATH 18AMATH-018A

NOTE: This applies to all main campus courses, regardless of department.

2. How Section Codes Are Built in TSS: Each section code is made up of four parts:

  1. Subject Code
  2. Offering Number
  3. Instruction Type
  4. Section Increment

ISIS and TSS Differences

ISIS CourseTSS Course
Primary component was A00Primary component will be 000
Offering numbers were represented as letters (A, B, C…)Offering numbers are represented as numbers (001, 002, 003…)
Different instruction types used different number ranges (e.g., 50–74 for labs)Each instruction type starts at 001

TSS Display Breakdown:

Course Instruction Type

The following terms represent the different levels of instruction type.

AbbreviationDefinition
CGCourse Group
SM Course / Module
DTeaching Method
EEvent w/ Meetings
ELEvent w/o Meetings - Fully Remote

Note: In TSS, Course Groupings designate a student's academic program of study and include major, minor, college, Area Studies, and Program of Concentration.
