Late Fees

Overview

Students can incur a variety of late fees on their student accounts from multiple offices across campus. It is especially important to understand that late fees can only be reviewed by the assessing department.

Questions about what a late fee represents and why it was assessed to the account should be directed to the respective assessing department. For more general information about late fees, please visit our office’s late fees webpage.

Please continue reading to learn about some of the more common late fees which are assessed to student accounts, and the offices which assess them.

Student Financial Solutions

Late fees are typically assessed when students have a past due balance on their account of $50 or greater. Our office issues two late fees: the UCSD Statement Late Fee and the TRIP Late Fee

UCSD Statement Late Fee

$25 fee which is assessed onto accounts for students who failed to make payment on time for the last billing statement. This fee is usually due to unpaid miscellaneous charges, such as those related to the UCSD Bookstore, the Library, and parking permits charged by the Transportation Offices. This fee can be charged up to 3 times, one for each consecutive month.

TRIP Late Fee

$50 fee which is assessed onto accounts for students that failed to make timely payment, specifically for charges related to the Triton Registration Installment Plan (TRIP).

Any requests to waive these late fees must be directed to our office via the UCSD Services and Support Portal. Please note that all requests to waive a late fee(s) are handled on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee that a late fee will be waived.

Registrar's Office

The UC San Diego Office of the Registrar assesses two late fees of $50, one for late enrollment and another for late registration. It is not uncommon for these fees to be charged together, especially when a student has been dropped from classes due to non-payment.  It is the student's responsibility to ensure all tuition and registration fees are paid by the payment deadline regardless if the student enrolls late, is wait listed, or is reinstated.

Late Enrollment Fee

Assessed to students who enroll in classes past the published enrollment deadline for the respective quarter or Summer Session.

Late Registration Fee

Assessed to students who fail to pay for tuition and registration fees by the payment deadline for the respective quarter or Summer Session; this will result in cancelled enrollment for the student.

Late fees are typically waived in situations where university action/inaction causes the delay in enrollment or fee payment, as well as in situations where the student cannot pay due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or an accident. Requests to waive these fees must be directed to the Office of the Registrar, or the Summer Session Office, as their office takes over this role during the summer term. Please note that all requests to waive a late fee(s) are handled on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee that a late fee will be waived.

More information can be found on the Registrar's Office website

Student Health

All registered students are automatically enrolled into the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP).  Students who are currently covered under a private health plan and do not wish to be covered by UC SHIP may submit an online application to opt out of (waive) the UC SHIP. This process must be completed for each academic year to avoid automatic enrollment into UC SHIP.

A late fee of $50.00 is assessed to the student’s account if they apply after the initial waiver periods. These timeframes will vary per quarter, and can be found on the Student Health Services website

Late fees are typically waived in situations that involve some form of administrative error, processing error, or application denial. Please note that all requests to waive a late fee(s) are handled on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee that a late fee will be waived. If you would like to file a health fee Waiver Appeal, please print and complete the Waiver Appeal form

You can bring the form to the Insurance Office in the Student Health Clinic; fax it to 858-822-5910; or e-mail it to SHIP9@ucsd.edu. Remember: Appeals are only accepted during an open waiver period.
