Overview
All registered UC San Diego students are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) and charged a mandatory fee.
If you already have a private health insurance provider that meets University requirements, you may apply for a "Health Fee Waiver." If approved, the UC SHIP charge will be removed from your student account.
Requirements for Opting Out
To waive the fee, your private insurance must:
- Be active on the first day of the quarter.
- Meet specific coverage criteria (such as local care access and emergency coverage).
- Be verified through the online waiver portal each academic year.
How to Submit a Waiver
- Check Deadlines: Visit the Student Health Services (SHS) website to find the waiver deadline for the current quarter.
- Gather Documents: Have your private insurance member ID card and summary of benefits ready.
- Apply Online: Log into the Health Fee Waiver portal using your Single Sign-On (SSO) credentials.
- Confirm Status: You will receive an automated email once your waiver is approved or denied.
