Understanding UC SHIP Waiver Credits & Billing Timelines

Overview

All registered UC San Diego students are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP as a condition of enrollment. If you have comparable private health insurance, you may submit a waiver through the Academic HealthPlans (AHP) portal.

Important: Because enrollment is automatic, the UC SHIP charge will appear on your bill before your waiver is processed. The charge is only removed once your waiver is officially approved and synced with the Student Financial Solutions (SFS) billing system.

The Waiver Timeline

To understand your balance, please follow this processing timeline:

  1. Submission: You submit your waiver via the Health Fee Waiver link, provided under Financial Tools of MyTritonLink (which will redirect you to AHP's portal).
  2. Verification (7–10 Business Days): AHP verifies your insurance coverage. You will receive an automated email once your waiver is approved or denied.
  3. Billing Sync (1–3 Business Days): After you receive your approval email, it takes up to 3 business days for the credit to post to your TritonPay account.
  4. Balance Update: Your "Total Amount Due" will automatically update once the credit is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

My waiver was approved, but I still see the charge. What should I do?

If it has been fewer than 3 business days since your approval email, please wait for the systems to sync. If it has been more than 3 business days, refresh your TritonPay portal or check the "Activity Details" tab to see if a "Health Fee Waiver" credit has been posted.

Do I have to pay the UC SHIP charge if my waiver is pending?

If your waiver is not approved by the registration fee payment deadline, you are responsible for paying the full balance to avoid enrollment holds or course cancellation. If your waiver is approved later, the credit will be applied to your account, and you can request a refund for the overpayment by submitting the Student Refund Request Form.

Does my waiver last all year?

Waivers approved in the Fall generally apply to the entire academic year (Winter and Spring). However, you must reapply for a new waiver every summer for the upcoming academic year.
