Continuing Students: Do I Need a New ID Card?

Overview

As part of the transition to the new Triton Student System (TSS), student PIDs are being replaced with Triton Student Numbers (TSNs). As a continuing student, you may have noticed that your campus ID card has your legacy PID printed on it and may be concerned if your ID will still function as intended going into the new academic year. Replacing My Student ID: Is It Necessary?

The short answer? No!

You do not need to replace your current campus ID card. Your existing ID card will continue to work normally, even if it displays your PID. The Campus Cards Office is working to ensure that existing campus ID cards maintain their dorm and building access as well as their ability to use Triton Cash and Dining Dollars.

What if my ID card stops working?

ID cards can experience wear and tear for several different reasons, which can affect the quality of the card. Eventually, depending on the amount or type of wear and tear a card endures, it may stop working whenever you attempt to swipe it, tap it, or both. In which case, you will need to have your campus ID card replaced.

To request a brand new ID, please review our other Knowledge Base Article on the topic How to Replace Your UC San Diego Student ID Card. Once you receive your new ID card, it will display your TSN instead of your legacy PID.

Note: Replacing your ID card solely to receive a TSN or for access to buildings, dorms, Triton Cash, and Dining Dollars is not necessary.
